Cycling weekend in Beaune, Burgundy

Discovery of the cultural and wine heritage of the Côte d'Or

Cycling weekend with 3 loops around Beaune

This cycling weekend in Burgundy takes you to discover this remarkable region. In the form of three loops around Beaune, you pedal in the heart of the forest and vineyard landscapes of the Côte d'Or.

Enjoy a weekend of local specialties and products such as gingerbread, Burgundy truffles, snails and, of course, wines. These three bike loops  will give you the opportunity to cycle through the vineyards and enjoy a tasting of Pommard, Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet while visiting their admirable domains. You will also cycle along the Voie des Vignes, a greenway that links Santenay to Beaune and follows the vineyard roads and the Climats de Bourgogne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (In Burgundy, a climat is a defined parcel of land with its own geological characteristics and vines of a single variety).

Beaune is the central point of your stay. It is a fortified town with charming cobblestone streets. You will visit the famous and emblematic Hospices de Beaune with their glazed and colored tile roofs. Built in the 15th century, this hospital is now a historical monument and houses a museum of medical history. The wine museum, located in the Hotel of the Dukes of Burgundy, is also worth a visit to complete your discovery of the region’s wine heritage.

Cycle to the charming village of Savigny-lès-Beaune with its 14th century castle and the Etangs d’Or. This natural area is waiting to be discovered and offers you a bucolic walk. The ascent of the hill of the Croix Corton is equally beautiful, with a magnificent panorama of the Côte d’Azur. At the top, you will find the Cross of Charlemagne, offered by the Hospices de Beaune to the House of Louis-Latour.

This weekend bike stay, open to all, offers food and wine lovers a true gourmet escape. Thanks to the undeniable charm of the Côte d’Or and its incredible cultural and wine heritage, it is common to want to extend your stay…

Day 2

BEAUNE, BOUCLE DE LA VOIE DES VIGNES 36km 191m Niveau Facile

This loop guides you south of Beaune. At the beginning of the stage, the village of Pommard can be the occasion for a first stop. The village produces the AOC Pommard, a red wine from the Côte de Beaune vineyards, which Flaubert praises in Madame Bovary. As far as Puligny-Montrachet, you pedal along the “voie des vignes”, a green route that winds through the vineyards.

On the way back to Beaune, you pass by the Etangs d’Or, an ideal place for an open-air picnic or a nap in the shade.

  • For a few more km 61km 711m Niveau Loisir

After the vineyard path that leads you to Puligny Montrachet, you will gain height. There are many points of interest along the way: the château of Chassagne Montrachet, owned by the Picard family, the medieval town of Nolay, the cirque du bout du monde at an altitude of 530 metres and the cliffs of Saint-Romain. There are several clear viewpoints from which to contemplate the rolling hills of the region.

Day 3

BEAUNE, BOUCLE DE LA COLLINE DE LA CROIX DE CORTON 27km 247m Niveau Facile

This bucolic loop takes you north of Beaune. At the beginning of the stage, you pass the castle of Savigny-lès-Beaune. The highlight of the stage is the ascent of the Croix Corton hill where the cross of Charlemagne is enthroned. The Charlemagne Cross in Aloxe-Corton dates from 1943. It was offered by the Hospices de Beaune to the Louis-Latour house. The hill dominates the vineyards and offers a magnificent 180 degree panorama.

This loop passes through numerous wine estates. This is an opportunity to taste new wines as you wish (in moderation!).

  • For a few more km 48km 396m Niveau Loisir

After Aloxe Corton, you continue a little further north to the town of Nuits Saint George, another famous Burgundy appellation.
