Scandinavia by Bike

Often perceived as distant or challenging, the Scandinavian countries are actually accessible playgournds for cycling vacations. Here, the open spaces stretch out, the landscapes breathe, and you ride through environments where nature remains ever-present. Forests, archipelagos, fjords, lakes: it’s hard to find more variety on a single cycling trip in Scandinavia.

What makes these regions unique is also the way you explore them. Thanks to a deeply rooted culture—the right of public access to nature, “Allemansrätten”—you can move about freely, stop whenever you like, and fully enjoy the surroundings, provided you respect them. On a bike, this changes everything and makes cycling in Scandinavia a unique experience among European destinations.

And then there’s the pace. Less dense, more drawn-out. You ride longer without encountering many people; you adapt, you anticipate, you enjoy things differently. Here, a cycling trip in Scandinavia is shaped as much by the movement as by the breaks: a more direct, simpler way to get closer to what truly matters.

Our Expertise in Scandinavia

At Abicyclette Voyages, our cycling tours in Scandinavia have evolved gradually, driven above all by the people we’ve met and our shared passion.

It all began with Valentin, our destination expert, who has been exploring the Scandinavian countries for many years. Through his travels, he discovered a different way of cycling, one that’s freer and closer to nature. It was this vision that inspired our first projects. Denmark led the way, with a custom-designed trip created for travelers eager to discover these northern lands by bike, before being added to our catalog in 2023.

Following this, Norway and then Sweden joined our offerings in 2024. The itineraries quickly found their audience, drawn by the balance between nature, cycling infrastructure, and a sense of space.

Behind these trips lies a collective effort on the ground. Johanne, Fabien, and David travel to the locations to scout the routes, refine the stages, and build enduring local partnerships. Each itinerary is the result of these scouting trips, tailored as closely as possible to the experience we aim to offer.

And the story continues to unfold. Further explorations are underway, with new travel ideas that will soon complement these Scandinavian cycling getaways.

Cycling in Denmark

Denmark is the perfect gateway for exploring Scandinavia by bike. With an extensive network of 12,000 kilometers of bike paths and trails, the Kingdom of Denmark offers travelers a safe environment for cycling. It is also a land of plains and rolling hills. Its gentle terrain makes cycling in Denmark easy and accessible to everyone, especially children.

Denmark consists of a mainland portion, the Jutland Peninsula, an extension of Germany, and a constellation of 443 islands, 76 of which are inhabited. In this land of Vikings, the sea is never more than 50 kilometers away, no matter where you are.

The coastlines are varied. The North Sea coastline is very rugged and dotted with shifting sand dunes, sometimes covered in wild grasses. The eastern coast of Jutland is indented with numerous wooded fjords. On the southern islands, chalk cliffs and long beaches of fine sand or pebbles make up the coastline. This constant proximity to the water is an integral part of the experience of a cycling trip in Scandinavia.

Exploring Denmark by bike also means strolling through the country’s most beautiful cities along the many bike paths that crisscross them. Copenhagen, the capital of course, but also Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Roskilde, and Ribe are brimming with charm and tourist attractions (castles, gardens, cathedrals, museums, attractions…).

Cycling in Sweden

Sweden is a country that beckons adventure, a top destination for a cycling trip in Scandinavia. With an area roughly equivalent to that of France, Sweden stretches over 1,500 kilometers from south to north, making it the largest and most populous of the Scandinavian countries.

The cycling network is well-developed, featuring several national and European cycle routes, including the Kattegattleden, voted Cycle Route of the Year in 2018. These infrastructure networks allow you to explore Scandinavia by bike under excellent conditions, particularly in the southern part of the country.

By bike, Sweden reveals itself through its forests, lakes, and coastline. More than 65% of the country is covered by forests, and the coastline stretches over 11,000 kilometers, dotted with thousands of islands. The Stockholm archipelago offers unique experiences for a cycling trip in Scandinavia, between land and sea.

Exploring Sweden by bike also means strolling through the country’s most beautiful cities on the many bike paths that crisscross them. From Stockholm to Gothenburg via Malmö, Uppsala, Helsingborg, or Kalmar, get a feel for the pulse of Swedish cities. Castles such as Drottningholm or Kalmar, cathedral gardens, and museums offer the chance to learn more about Sweden’s history and traditions.

Cycling in Norway

Norway offers a more engaging approach to explore Scandinavia by bike, with spectacular landscapes and a more rugged terrain. A land of majestic fjords, Norway is steeped in rich history and vibrant culture.

Nestled in northern Europe, this Scandinavian nation offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. Its dynamic cities, such as Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim, reveal a fascinating blend of contemporary architecture and historic landmarks. Historic sites like the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Bergen’s Hanseatic quarter, and its fjords offer a captivating glimpse into Norwegian history and geography.

Norwegians, proud of their Viking roots, are renowned for their warm hospitality and love of nature. Exploring Norway by bike is an unparalleled experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the diversity of its landscapes, from lush forests to snow-capped peaks.

For an enriching trip, opt for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and viewing the Northern Lights, while savoring the delights of Norwegian cuisine, from fresh fish to local specialties like meatballs and brown cheese. In short, choosing Norway means discovering another side of Scandinavia by bike: rougher, more immersive, where culture and nature come together harmoniously, offering an unforgettable travel experience.
