Northern Germany and Denmark by Bike

Starting in the German capital, Berlin, you cycle to the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Along the canals, through the forests, and around the blue lakes of Brandenburg, enjoy the charm of the Hanseatic cities and the beaches of Falster and Møn! This trip combines natural landscapes with a rich historical heritage for an authentic and unforgettable cycling adventure. Between Germany and Denmark, cycle through the heart of Northern Europe along the EuroVelo 7 route. Nine stages connect Berlin to Copenhagen. Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the big cities, find peace and quiet along the canals and in the forests thanks to greenways and small roads.

Your adventure begins in Oranienburg, a town located about 40 kilometers north of Berlin. A city with a rich historical past, it welcomes you with its Baroque castle, a testament to its Prussian heritage. Nearby, the Sachsenhausen Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the darkest hours of European history.

From the very first pedal strokes, you discover a lesser-known part of Northern Germany, where nature takes center stage. Along the Havel River, the scenery alternates between tranquil waterways, meadows, and picturesque villages. Gradually, the scenery changes, giving way to one of the highlights of this trip: the Mecklenburg Lake District. Water and forest combine to create a landscape painted in shades of green and blue, perfect for getting away from it all. In Müritz National Park, the trails wind through the riverbanks, woodlands, and wilderness areas, offering wonderful opportunities to take a break, observe the local wildlife, or simply enjoy the surrounding tranquility.

Along the way, also discover the historic towns of Neustrelitz and Waren, whose old town centers invite you to stroll. Further north, Güstrow reveals its architectural and artistic heritage, closely associated with the sculptor and writer Ernst Barlach. Between lush natural scenery and cultural stops, this section of the route reveals the full richness of a region still untouched by mass tourism.

Your journey takes you to the Baltic Sea, which you reach in Rostock. A former Hanseatic city, it preserves traces of its mercantile past in its historic streets, brick buildings, and distinctive facades. The maritime atmosphere becomes palpable as you approach the harbor, where boats and docks herald a new stage of your adventure. You board the ferry to Denmark, leaving the German landscapes behind to discover a new horizon.

In Denmark, on the islands of Falster and Møn, your journey takes on a distinctly coastal character. Greenways and small roads wind through the flat Danish countryside, dotted with hamlets featuring traditional buildings, some topped with thatched roofs. The coastline alternates between long beaches, small harbors, and panoramic views of the Baltic Sea. Marielyst Beach, stretching over 10 kilometers of fine white sand, is perfect for swimming. Renowned for its shallow, calm waters, it has been voted Denmark’s best beach several times. Near Rødvig, the chalk cliffs of Stevns Klint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, add height to the landscape.

Finally, your adventure ends in Copenhagen, Denmark’s creative, elegant, and bike-friendly capital. After exploring the rural landscapes and shores of the Baltic Sea, rediscover the energy of a city where bike paths abound. Stroll along the colorful facades of Nyhavn’s iconic quays, soak up the magical atmosphere of Tivoli Gardens, learn about Denmark’s history at Rosenborg Castle, and wander along Strøget, the city center’s largest pedestrian boulevard. With its architecture, design, culture, and Nordic lifestyle, Copenhagen offers a vibrant conclusion to your cycling adventure between Germany and Denmark.

Day 1

ORANIENBURG

Arrival in Oranienburg and check-in at your hotel. Located along the River Havel, Oranienburg is one of the oldest towns in Brandenburg. The city charms visitors with its elegant baroque palace, peaceful gardens, and the gentle canals that weave through its center. Once a princely residence, Oranienburg now delights with its serene atmosphere, blooming parks, and tranquil riverbanks. With its rich heritage, preserved natural surroundings, and close proximity to Berlin, it is the perfect place to begin your journey through northern Germany.

Day 2

From ORANIENBURG to ZEHDENICK 36km 100m Niveau Loisir

You leave Oranienburg and cycle along the Havel River, enjoying the gentle water landscapes and green riverbanks that stretch alongside the canal. The route is pleasant and easy, offering a relaxing ride while taking in the nature and the small villages scattered along the river. Along the way, you visit the Mildenberg Museum Park, which brings the region’s industrial history to life. Once one of Europe’s largest brickworks areas, the museum allows you to see how the workshops operated and to appreciate this industrial heritage in an engaging and interactive way. The stage ends in Zehdenick, a town with historical charm, where the streets and old buildings tell their own story.

Day 3

From ZEHDENICK to NEUSTRELITZ 45km 150m Niveau Loisir

You leave Zehdenick and gradually enter the Mecklenburg Lake District, renowned for its picturesque lakes and gentle landscapes. The route takes you past several small and larger lakes, including the famous Stechlin, immortalized in literature by Theodor Fontane. You enjoy the peaceful riverbanks and surrounding forests, cycling along quiet and scenic paths. The stage ends in Neustrelitz, the former royal seat, where the castle park, the star-shaped market square, and the town layout reflect the rich history of the Grand Duchy of Strelitz.

Day 4

From NEUSTRELITZ to WAREN 65km 200m Niveau Forme

You leave Neustrelitz and enter Müritz National Park, the largest land national park in Germany. This extensive protected area is home to rare flora and fauna, offering a peaceful cycling experience surrounded by nature. Along the way, you can stop in Ankershagen to visit the H. Schliemann Museum, dedicated to the famous discoverer of Troy. The route continues through forests, lakes, and meadows before reaching Waren, a spa town and picturesque city on the shores of Lake Müritz, marking the end of this stage.

Day 5

From WAREN to GÜSTROW 69km 200m Niveau Forme

You leave the lively town of Waren/Müritz and head toward Nossentiner Heide National Park, a region of extensive woodlands and clear lakes. The cycling route is pleasant, allowing you to fully enjoy the natural landscapes and the tranquility of the park. By the end of the day, you reach Güstrow, a town associated with the artist Ernst Barlach. A visit to the historic old town, the castle, and Barlach’s studio provides a fitting cultural conclusion to this stage.

Day 6

From GÜSTROW to ROSTOCK 54km 200m Niveau Loisir

You leave Güstrow and follow the Bützow-Güstrow Canal towards Rostock. Along the Nebel River and the adjacent canal, you cycle through the Warnow valley, which gradually opens up towards the Baltic Sea. The route is hilly at the start and becomes flatter as you cross wide open landscapes. You may want to stop at the so-called Goose Fountain in Bützow and enjoy a coffee on the market square, comparing the charm of this town with that of Güstrow. Continuing along the route, you pass the old watermill in Schwaan, now a museum showcasing the history of the local artist colony. The route then follows mainly paved paths until you reach the Hanseatic city of Rostock. Upon arrival, you can explore its rich cultural heritage: St. Mary’s Church, historic merchant houses, and the lively port along the Warnow provide a striking contrast to the natural landscapes of the day.

Day 7

From ROSTOCK to NYKØBING FALSTER 40km 100m Niveau Loisir

You start the day with a short cycling transfer to the ferry port of Rostock, approximately 12 km. Then you cross the Baltic Sea by ferry to Gedser, an included journey of about two hours. On the Danish side, enjoy a scenic cycling route along dikes and through small woods, passing some of Falster’s most beautiful beaches. Upon arrival, the island’s capital, Nykøbing Falster, welcomes you with charm. You can explore the town by bike, wander among half-timbered houses, admire the 43-meter-high water tower, or end the day with a movie at the large Scala Bio cinema, a modern venue located on the town’s beach boulevard.

Day 8

From NYKØBING FALSTER to STEGE 75km 150m Niveau Forme

You follow the coast and cycle on easy terrain towards the old merchant town of Stubbekøbing. The route offers scenic views of the sea and peaceful stretches through small forests and farmland. From Stubbekøbing, you can take the ferry (on your own) to the island of Bogø, or alternatively cycle via Vordingborg to Kalvehave before reaching the island of Møn. This stage combines the enjoyment of cycling with picturesque ferry crossings and the discovery of charming small coastal towns.

Day 9

From STEGE to KØGE 107km 225m Niveau Expert

You cross the bridge connecting the island of Møn to the mainland of Zealand and continue cycling through landscapes dotted with country houses and manor houses surrounded by open farmland. Along the way, you pass Faxe Ladeplads at around 55 km, then Rødvig and its impressive cliffs at around 75 km. You continue on to Køge, enjoying a varied route that combines countryside, seaside, and charming coastal towns.

Day 10

From KØGE to COPENHAGEN 40km 150m Niveau Loisir

The route becomes more urban as you follow the Bay of Køge and pass through expanding towns on the way to the Danish capital. You still enjoy wide fields and long beaches, providing a pleasant and varied setting for cycling. Masts of small and large sailboats appear more frequently, and charming marinas such as Hundige Havn signal the popular swimming bays favored by Danes in summer. For those seeking a cultural experience, the Arken Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj offers world-class collections and architecture.

Cycling past the Amager Fælled pasture and nature reserve, historically used as an execution site until 1845, you gradually enter Copenhagen. Once in the city, you can stroll through the lively city center, explore the Nyhavn district, visit the historic Tivoli Gardens, the Rosenborg Castle, and wander along Strøget, the main pedestrian street in Copenhagen.

Day 11

COPENHAGEN

End of the tour after breakfast. Copenhagen, the vibrant Danish capital, offers a final moment filled with charm and elegance. In the early morning, a stroll along the colourful houses of Nyhavn reveals the soft golden light reflecting on the canal as the city awakens. Cobblestone streets lead into the historic heart, where royal palaces and copper-green spires shape the skyline. A last walk or bike ride along the waterfront captures the city’s spirit, a harmonious blend of Scandinavian design, maritime heritage, and gentle Nordic atmosphere.
