Denmark by bike, a holiday in the heart of soothing natural landscapes
Discover the unspoilt natural beauty of the Lillebælt Strait and the Danish Islands by bike. Pedal your way through the islands of Skarø and Ærø.
Lillebælt and the Danish Islands form a most natural region in the heart of Denmark. The Lillebælt belt refers to the strait between the island of Funen and Jutland, right in the center of the country. This 50-kilometer-long strait is home to numerous small Danish islands, making it Denmark’s largest nature park. From Flensburg in Germany, set off by bike to discover Denmark’s spectacular biodiversity, exploring the islands of Skarø and Ærø.
Small and unspoilt, Skarø captivates with its tranquil ambience and secluded beaches. Skarø offers the perfect escape for cyclo-tourists looking for tranquility in an unspoilt natural setting. Ærø, meanwhile, enchants with its cobbled streets, colorful houses and medieval atmosphere. The island is packed with historic sites, captivating museums and lively harbors. Cyclists can enjoy panoramic views from the cliffs of Voderup Klint and immerse themselves in a traditional maritime atmosphere as they discover the town of Marstal.
Whether you’re a keen cyclist or an occasional traveler, Denmark offers an enjoyable cycling experience with its many facilities. You’ll get the most out of discovering this country on a relaxing tour that’s accessible to all. A rich experience awaits you, combining active adventure, cultural discovery and outdoor relaxation in this unspoilt corner of Denmark!
From FLENSBURG to AABENRAA 55km
You leave Flensburg and soon cross the Danish border.
On the ox trail, where cattle used to be driven to market, you pedal along quiet paths through the Jutland countryside. At the end of the stage, you reach the town of Åbenrå, nestling at the end of its fjord.
From AABENRAA to CHRISTIANSFELD 55km
Today, your first stop is Haderslev. Its medieval town is an inviting place for a stroll. Back in the saddle, you pedal between land and sea to the UNESCO-listed town of Christiansfeld.
Founded in 1773, this settlement is an example of the planned settlement of the Moravian Church, a free Lutheran congregation based in Saxony. Conceived as a model of the Protestant urban ideal, the town grew up around a central church and its square. The houses, single-storey or two-storey, feature unadorned yellow brick facades and red-tiled roofs.
From CHRISTIANSFELD to MIDDELFART 65km
After leaving Christiansfeld, you ride through beautiful woodland to Kolding.
In the distance, from the saddle of your bike, you can already see the massive tower of the former royal castle of Koldinghus.
Passing the Kolding fjord and Skærbæk, you cross the Little Belt just before reaching your destination for the day, Middelfart.
Discover Middelfart, known for its picturesque location along the strait, offering panoramic views of the water and surrounding islands.
From MIDDELFART to ODENSE 60km
Visit the Henner Friisers Hus in Middelfart. It is considered one of the most beautiful half-timbered houses in Denmark. You cycle along the coast to Strib with its small lighthouse. Take a short break on the beach: with a bit of luck you will see porpoises. It continues through idyllic landscapes until you reach Odense, the third largest city in the country. If you want to shorten the stage, follow route 6 out of Middelfart to Odense today (- 7 km).
From ODENSE to SVENDBORG 60km
Today’s stage of your Danish bike tour takes you to the south of the island of Fionie.
Passing Egeskov Castle, where you should plan a visit, you reach the coast on the western outskirts of Svendborg, Fionie’s second-largest town and renowned for its maritime ambience, rich history and picturesque scenery.
From SVENDBORG to ÆRØSKØBING 60km
Today, you travel by ferry to the island of Ærø.
You dock at Ærøskøbing, the island’s oldest town. Stroll through its maze of cobbled streets lined with colorful houses. Then you’re off to discover the charms of the island of Ærø. You’ll pass through the seaside town of Marstal, the cliffs of Voderup Klint, the hunting lodge of Søbygaard and the lighthouse of Skjoldnæs. Weather permitting, the island’s many beaches are ideal for swimming.
Once you’ve completed your tour of the island, take the ferry back to Svendborg.
From SVENDBORG to SKARO 20km
You set off to discover the small, sparsely populated island of Skarø.
You’ll cycle around the island on quiet lanes. Don’t miss a visit to Skarø Is, an ice cream parlour where Britta and Martin sell their organic birch juice ice creams and coffee in their farm store. A must on this charming island!
From SVENDBORG to FAABORG 35km
Part of the route takes you westwards through the seaside suburb of Rantzausminde.
After the village of Ballen, you can stop at a small beach. Through gently undulating terrain, the route leads in a varied way through small towns partly off the coast to Fåborg.
Fåborg’s town gate, Vesterport, is one of only two preserved town gates in Denmark.
From FAABORG to SONDERBORG 45km
Not without regret, you leave Fåborg, one of Denmark’s oldest towns. You reach Bøjden, where you board a ferry to the island of Als. The crossing takes around 1 hour and gives you the chance to contemplate the myriad islands that make up the Danish archipelago. Once on the island of Als, you pedal through the countryside on cycle paths, greenways and back roads to Sonderborg.
From SONDERBORG to FLENSBURG 40km
In Sønderborg, visit the castle of the same name, one of the oldest royal castles in Jutland, right on the water. Afterwards you start the last stage of your bike tour. In Dybbøl you have a wonderful view over the Flensburg Fjord. A memorial commemorates the German-Danish war in 1864. It is worth taking a break in Gråsten, where the summer residence of the Danish royal family is located. Soon you cross the border and are back in Flensburg.
