The Region of Great Portuguese Wines

Discover Alentejo by bike, a region with enchanting landscapes and a deeply rooted identity. On your saddle, set off to explore this authentic Portugal, with rolling hills, golden vineyards, and villages steeped in history

Alentejo is not the most well-known region of Portugal. The Algarve, further south, or the iconic Douro Valley in the north of Portugal are far more famous with the general public. This wild and authentic character is part of the charm of Alentejo, far from the crowds of touristy areas. But that’s not all. Alentejo also boasts a rich historical heritage, picturesque villages, fragrant hills dotted with olive trees, cork oaks, and renowned vineyards. This cycling trip through Alentejo promises a colorful adventure full of flavors. It’s an ideal getaway in spring or autumn to enjoy the Portuguese sun.

After a transfer from Lisbon, start the first pedal strokes of your cycling trip in Alentejo in Estremoz, a lovely perched medieval town. Then, head to Vila Viçosa, the Portuguese capital of marble. Don’t miss the majestic Ducal Palace, a symbol of the country’s royal past. The Redondo Castle is also a must-see. Along the way, be captivated by the region’s rich craftsmanship: tile work, pottery, tapestries. At the end of your journey, reach Évora, the capital of Alentejo. Évora’s historic city center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. The city is home to a large number of medieval and Renaissance palaces, as well as many remarkable monuments, such as a Roman temple. In its maze of cobblestone streets, fall under the charm of facades adorned with traditional azulejos, decorative ceramic tiles.

Between these towns and villages, cycle through an authentic Portugal. Under the bright sun, ride along small roads and greenways through hills covered with centuries-old olive trees and cork oaks, bordered by stone walls. As a wine-growing region, Alentejo offers wines that surprise with their colors and aromas. In the landscape, golden vineyards undulate across the hills and stretch to the horizon. Alentejo is a controlled appellation (DOC). During each stage, stop at the many wineries to taste the wines of Alentejo. White wines are aromatic, fresh, and harmonious, while red wines, with their ruby or garnet color, combine character and finesse.

Along your way, you are welcomed by the warmth of the locals, proud to share their traditions, gastronomy, and love for their land. As a reward for your efforts, Portuguese cuisine is simply delicious, enhanced by the best wines of Alentejo. Meat dishes highlight the black pork (in charcuterie or as a main dish), a great specialty of the region, and lamb (Ensopado de borrego). Also try the surprising Carne de porco à Alentejana, which combines meat and shellfish. A true invention of Alentejo. Cheeses (Queijo de Serpa) and sweets (Sericaia) complete the rich local gastronomy. To avoid hunger during your ride, think about the famous Portuguese flan, the delicious pasteis de nata.

This cycling trip through Alentejo invites you to experience a unique sensory journey, blending history, nature, and culture. Each stage brings you closer to the essence of Alentejo, where authenticity, conviviality, and awe meet. The hospitality and generosity of the Portuguese, many of whom speak English, allow you to travel with peace of mind. At the end of your adventure, you’ll take with you not only unforgettable memories but also a deep connection with this enchanting and authentic land.
