By following the towpaths or venturing on the small roads with low traffic, Champagne is a destination of choice for cycling tourism. Discover charming villages in the heart of the vineyards and venture into the heart of the Champagne countryside, between forests, streams or around the Reims Mountain.
Mixing the beauty of the landscapes and the joys of the palate, the region will not leave you indifferent, whatever your level or your desires.
It’s impossible to not talk about wine when we talk about Champagne! The vine was brought by the Romans but the sparkling wine does make an appearance until the 14th century. Since then, an entire economy has been forged around its vineyards that produce one of the most famous wines in the world.
Subjected to invasions and therefore to various influences throughout its history, Champagne has inherited a very varied architectural heritage. The monuments in chalk or terracotta brick follow the half-timbered ones. The Roman era left some remnants, notably in Reims. From medieval castles to Romanesque churches to Gothic buildings, let yourself be enchanted by all this architectural diversity.
The region was strongly impacted by the First World War but was still able to relaunch its economy which, in addition to wine, has long been heavily based on crafts. Knives are made in the region, as the Nogent Cutlery Museum can testify. Basketry, stained glass work, glass and textiles are also very developed.
The gastronomy is not left behind with many local specialties among them the Ham and the Reims Rose Biscuits or the Champagne Truffle. Sweet delicacies to accompany a glass of Champagne are not lacking either …
The network of bicycle lanes in Champagne was built on the towpaths along the rivers and canals that wind through the region, as well as on abandoned railways. Tourism infrastructures have also adapted to the growth of bicycle tourism by providing secure areas for bicycles and many bicycle shops.
Two major routes serve the Champagne-Ardenne region: Champagne à Vélo and the Ardennes à Vélo, which offer more than 450 km of greenways to help you discover all the charms of the region.
Champagne offers a temperate climate. The plains of Champagne around Reims and Troyes are bathed by a relatively mild and less rainy climate than the regions further east and north with reasonable annual rainfall.
In the summer, it’s pleasant to cycle in the region thanks to mild temperatures between 20 and 25 ° C on average. However, the mornings can be chilly, which is why it’s better to have a warm layer for morning outings.
That was really the best vacation we ever had! Where should we go this summer? I would love to do another trip this year. Do you have any great itinerary ideas for us? We have 7 inches of snow here right now, and the temperature is MINUS 5 degree F. with a windchill of MINUS 19! Chilly!! xxx (07/2009)
Hi David Just wanted to mention again what a wonderful trip we had along the Loire in Brittany . We loved the food, and the itineraries were just right (...) Cheers Trevor (11/2018)
Hello Natalie, We are now back in Sweden from our bicycle tour in Normandy. I would just like to give you some feed back from the tour: We were all very satisfied with the trip. When planning the trip, we found it very easy to work with you, quick answers and good flexibility for our ideas. Excellent choice of roads, which took us through the fantastic landscapes of Normandy, and also along the fashinating see shores ending with the first D-day shore. Most roads with very little traffic. We also appreciated the kindness of all french drivers who never complained although we sometimes were in the middle of the small narrow roads. The distances was OK for all of us. When there was a choice of long or short distances, we always selected the long ones. Easy to find the roads with the excellent GPS and the very good Road Book. We also appreciated the very good choice of B&B, places where we felt wellcome and with good standard. A trip we will recommend to our friends. We also had good luck with the weather, lots of sun, not to strong winds, just one or two showers in daytime. (Was the weather also organised by you??) With Best Regards (05/2017)
It has been an excellent experience. Totally raw with the bicycles, everything was organized so well (bicycles, housings, local information to eating) that we enjoy every moment of the tour. The explanations of the first day on the part of the guide us turned out to be very useful and to know that always you could rely on the organization it allowed us to enjoy the trip. The tour, on there having no been rolled traffic, is most indicated for people that as us it cannot circulate in road with the bicycle. The way of sirga that accompanies on the channel of Nantes Brest is of a spectacular beauty. It seems of another time, to admire the flowers that adorn the exclusas of the Channel, the villages that you are, a marvel. What more we estimate : All the explanations the day of delivery of the bicycles and of the documentation. The transport of suitcases and last day the taxi up to the village where we had to catch the bus. We come to France without having anything organized absolutely. (09/2017)
