Cycling Adventure in Slovenia: crystal-clear Lakes, Alpine Villages, and Untouched Nature

Embark on a breathtaking cycling journey through the most enchanting landscapes of northern Slovenia. Between turquoise alpine lakes, lush valleys, and villages steeped in mountain serenity, discover a land where nature reigns supreme. A relaxed, accessible adventure that carries you from the shores of Lake Bled through the forests of the Jelovica plateau, all the way to the majestic peaks of the Julian Alps

This cycling tour in a loop begins and ends at Bled, an iconic alpine gem. The lake’s shimmering blue waters reflect the tiny island church and the medieval castle perched above, creating a nearly otherworldly atmosphere. This idyllic setting is a perfect introduction to Slovenia’s charm, with its gentle climate, healing waters, and timeless traditions, offering a glimpse of the pristine nature that awaits you.

Soon, you ascend to the Pokljuka plateau, a vast forested highland opening onto breathtaking alpine panoramas. From here, a long descent takes you into the Bohinj Valley, dotted with quaint alpine villages and exuding a sense of peaceful serenity. Lake Bohinj, the largest and deepest in the country, is embraced by majestic peaks. A loop around the lake, a visit to Savica waterfall, or a cable car ride to Mount Vogel completes this immersion into Slovenia’s wild heart, where every moment celebrates the raw beauty of nature and the freedom of cycling.

The route continues across the Jelovica plateau, reachable either by your own pedaling or by lift, offering a taste of Slovenia’s hidden charms: deep forests, perched villages, and sun-drenched valleys traversed at a gentle cycling rhythm. The charming village of Sorica, birthplace of painter Ivan Grohar, lies amid rolling hills and glowing meadows, while Železniki’s historic roofs announce your arrival at Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s oldest medieval towns. From its castle, a unique panorama rewards your efforts — one of those simple yet unforgettable emotions that only an itinerant journey can provide.

Your path then crosses the Sora Plain, framed by the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. On a sunny day, a refreshing dip in Lake Preddvor adds a reviving pause to your ride. In the evening, the Brdo Estate envelopes you in absolute calm, providing a moment of well-being between two days of pedaling.

Further along, in Begunje, history merges with the landscape, and the ruins of Kamen Castle emerge like a romantic interlude. The route continues along a cycle path winding between mountain ranges, offering a succession of inspiring panoramas and moments of contemplation en route to Kranjska Gora, a vibrant alpine hub.

The final day leads through Kranj and Kropa, where metalworking traditions come to life in a living museum. Returning gradually to Radovljica, with its well-preserved streets and beekeeping museum, signals the end of your adventure. Soon, the tranquil waters of Bled reappear, a gentle reminder of this Slovenian interlude coming to a close.

This accessible cycling tour, with optional routes allowing you to adjust effort, offers a full immersion into the soul of northern Slovenia. Between grand alpine landscapes, authentic encounters, living heritage, and moments suspended in time, you experience a gentle, balanced, and deeply inspiring adventure.

Day 1

BLED

Arrive in Bled and check into your hotel. Bled is one of Europe’s most beautiful alpine resort destinations, thanks to its lake and medieval clifftop castle. Bled could be a representation of paradise, and is a world-famous tourist gem. Located next to the Triglav National Park, it has been nominated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Bled stands out for its mild climate, healing properties and thermal springs supplied by lake water.

Meeting with our local guide

Before your first ride, we invite you to meet one of our guides, at your place of departure. A time of exchange, a privileged moment to give you our last practical tips, must-see places and experiences, to answer all your questions, take care of your bike fitting to begin your trip.

Day 2

From BLED to BOHINJSKA BISTRICA 27km 130m Niveau Facile

A bus takes you to the Pokljuka high plateau. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking views before descending into the nearby Bohinj valley. You pedal through the many small alpine villages dotted around the valley until you reach the small village of Ribčev Laz (Fisherman’s Pass), situated next to the beautiful Lake Bohinj. Bohinj is the largest and deepest lake in the National Park. It is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks. The view from the Ribčev Laz bridge is incomparable. Explore the forests surrounding the lake before spending the evening in one of the region’s cosiest villages.

  • For a few more km 43km 330m Niveau Loisir

Cycle around the lake to the Savica waterfall, then take the cable car up to Mount Vogel for spectacular views of the Bohinj valley and Mount Triglav, the highest peak in the Julian Alps.

Day 3

From BOHINJSKA BISTRICA to ŠKOFJA LOKA 49km 900m Niveau Forme

Leaving the Bohinj valley, you cycle to the charming village of Bohinjska Bistrica. You then climb and gain altitude to the Jelovica plateau (a lift to the top of the pass is available). From the summit, the route takes you through deep forest down into the Selška Dolina valley and finally to the Škofja Loka hills. During this stage, discover the small alpine village of Sorica, set amidst lush green hills. It is the birthplace of the famous Slovenian painter, Ivan Grohar. As you enter the village, you are greeted by his statue and can visit a gallery dedicated to him. Your day continues with a visit to the historic town of Železniki. You arrive in the wonderful town of Škofja Loka, one of Slovenia’s oldest cities. We recommend you cycle up to the castle on the hill overlooking the town. A last effort for a unique panorama of the town.

Day 4

From ŠKOFJA LOKA to PREDOSLJE 45km 250m Niveau Loisir

Leaving Škofja Loka, you cross the wide Sora plain against the backdrop of the flat Kamnik-Savinja peaks.
If the weather is warm enough, you can take a refreshing dip in the small Preddvor lake.
This easy day’s cycling ends at the Brdo estate. The former royal and presidential residence boasts a magnificent park where you can relax before dinner.

Day 5

From PREDOSLJE to RADOVLJICA 46km 600m Niveau Forme

Spend the morning visiting Kranj, the capital of Carniola. Your itinerary then takes you to the fascinating little village of Kropa, home to the Blacksmith’s Museum dedicated to the history of the town’s blacksmithing trade. You can even learn how to make your own nail and add it to the current collection of over 100 types, or take it home with you.
The route then takes you along the Jelovica high plateau to Radovljica, with its beautifully preserved old town and interesting beekeeping museum.

Day 6

From RADOVLJICA to KRANJSKA GORA 50km 600m Niveau Forme

Today’s route takes you along the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to the historic village of Begunje.
It was in this small village that one of Slovenia’s darkest moments took place. Visit the hostage museum and learn how thousands of men, women and children were beaten and executed during the German occupation of the Second World War. Begunje is also the birthplace of the famous Slavko Avsenik / Oberkrainer band. Just 2 km away are the ruins of Kamen Castle. As the sun illuminates the mountains, your route takes you along a cycle path that passes between the Julian Alps and the Karawanke mountains to Kranjska Gora, a popular alpine town, famous for its ski resorts, but also an excellent starting point for many summer activities.

  • For a few more km 63km 740m Niveau Expert

You can take a short excursion to the observation point of Mount Spik, considered one of Slovenia’s most difficult peaks to climb. If you arrive in time, you can take a trip to the Planica valley, home of the famous ski jumping championships. This is where the longest jumps have been made, including the current world record.

Day 7

From KRANJSKA GORA to BLED 40km 290m Niveau Loisir

Today you ride to the heart of Triglav National Park. The route takes you along the Sava Dolinka River, which winds its way south to join the Sava Bohinjka, where it becomes the Sava River, Slovenia’s longest. From Mojstrana, you head for the Krma Valley. This green valley runs through a peaceful forest, dotted with World War II monuments and traditional buildings, one of which has been converted into a museum. Enjoy lunch in a refuge at the foot of Triglav, the highest mountain in the Julian Alps, and take in the breathtaking scenery. From here, you head for the Radovna valley, between the Pokljuka and Mežakla plateaus. On leaving the valley, take a short detour to the astonishing 1.6 km-long Vintgar Gorge, carved 150 m deep into the mountains by the Radovna River. The gorge has been discovered by chance by the town’s mayor in 1891, who then set about building footbridges to open the gorge to the public.

It was a great combination of challenging and comfortable cycling with good accommodation. The route is a very good one, as it passes through some iconic French towns. Riding into Sete on a gloriously sunny afternoon at the end of October in 22C and seeing so many people enjoying seafood in all the restaurants was wonderful! In this region of France you are never far away from a fabulous meal!

Thank you Gaëlle, Simon and everyone else!

The beautiful country side was fantastic. Delivery and pick up of bags worked well. Vandenesse spa resort was great and the restaurant next door that we received a voucher for was incredible. Great bike trip but a few hotels were really not in great shape.
