The story behind the trip
Marie, sales and production assistant at Abicyclette Voyages, knows Albania well, having lived there and traveled there several times. She particularly recommends the south of the country for its diversity of landscapes in a concentrated area: lakes, mountains, high plateaus, and the Mediterranean coast. What made her want to return was also the spontaneous and warm welcome of the Albanians, a true marker of the country’s identity. Marie also recommends Albanian cuisine. Simple and generous, it is a cross between Greek and Turkish influences. Each village has its own take on traditional dishes.
Cycling through the southern Balkans: From the mountains to the Mediterranean
This bike tour through southern Albania takes you from the highlands and the famous Lake Ohrid to the Mediterranean and the Ionian Sea. You cycle through a country with a remarkable heritage, including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Albania offers a unique Mediterranean culture thanks to limited tourism, which preserves its authenticity. Let yourself be charmed by the warm welcome of the Albanians, who contribute to the strenght of travelling at this edge of Europe.
The journey begins in the highlands of inland Albania. Bathed in sunshine, the landscapes stretch between mountains and fertile plains. The first few pedal strokes take you along the peaceful shores of Lake Ohrid, a huge body of water listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shared between Albania and North Macedonia. It is said to be the oldest lake in the world and the deepest in the Balkans. The atmosphere here is serene, almost meditative, setting the tone for a journey marked by contemplation.
As you head south, you cycle to Korçë, an elegant city known for its rich cultural heritage. Its architecture, marked by Balkan and European influences, its wide avenues and its restored old bazaar bear witness to a history open to exchange and tradition. Stops along the way are culinary and convivial, punctuated by lively cafés and local specialties.
Further south, the landscape changes again, shaping the horizon. Valleys follow one after another, stone villages offer pleasant stops, and the light becomes warmer. You then reach Gjirokastër, an Ottoman city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Clinging to the mountainside, it impresses with its tower houses, slate roofs, and dominant fortress. Strolling through its cobbled streets is like stepping back in time, in an Albania deeply rooted in its history.
The route continues to one of the major archaeological sites in the Balkans: Butrint. Nestled between a lagoon, forest, and sea, this exceptional place brings together the remains of several successive civilizations. The visit takes place in a calm and shaded atmosphere, where nature envelops the ancient stones and enhances the feeling of enchantment.
Little by little, the air becomes charged with sea spray and the Ionian Sea appears. By bike, you can enjoy the dazzling Mediterranean light, between open hills and panoramic sea views. The arrival on the coast marks the end of this journey: a gentle finale, facing turquoise waters and clear horizons.
This cycling journey through southern Albania offers a gradual immersion into a country of contrasts, between high-altitude lakes, historic cities, and sea shores. A journey rich in sensations, cultural discoveries, and landscapes, where each stage reveals a different facet of an endearing and deeply authentic Albania.
Itinerary

From TIRANA to TUSHEMISHT 40km 174m
You leave Tirana by shuttle transfer to reach Lin, a charming village set on the shores of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique ecosystem and historic heritage, the lake immediately offers a calm and scenic atmosphere. From Lin, you begin cycling along the lakeshore, following quiet roads bordered by reed beds, lakeside villages and open views towards the surrounding mountains. The route is smooth and accessible, leading to your hotel in Tushemisht, where a lunch break by the lake is possible if you wish. In the afternoon, you continue cycling to cross the border and visit the Monastery of St. Naum, a remarkable 10th-century complex set at the foot of the Galicica Mountains, recognisable by its red-tiled roofs. After the visit, you return at a relaxed pace to Tushemisht and enjoy the end of the day by the lake.
Meeting with our local guide
Before your first ride, we invite you to meet one of our guides, at your place of departure. A time of exchange, a privileged moment to give you our last practical tips, must-see places and experiences, to answer all your questions, take care of your bike fitting to begin your trip.
From TUSHEMISHT to KORÇË 50km 412m
In the morning, Lake Ohrid and the surrounding hills set the scene for the day’s ride. You leave Tushemisht on quiet rural roads and gradually gain elevation towards Korçë. The route is mostly rolling, crossing an agricultural landscape of fields, orchards and vineyards, with a few small towns ideal for a coffee stop. The approach to Korçë is gentle, leading into this elegant city often referred to as the “Paris of Albania.” After checking in at the hotel, you are free to explore the city at your own pace, admire one of the country’s largest Orthodox cathedrals, visit the first Albanian school founded in 1887, and enjoy the atmosphere of the recently restored old bazaar. Korçë stands out for the quality of its heritage and its lively cultural scene.
From KORÇË to LESKOVIK 68km 1170m
You leave the agricultural plateau of Korçë and head into more remote territory along the Greek border. The road gradually climbs through open valleys and isolated villages, with the Gramoz Mountains forming a constant backdrop on your left. The route alternates long, steady climbs with more rolling sections, set within increasingly open and mountainous landscapes. You reach Ersekë, the highest town in Albania, an ideal place for a break before continuing the effort. The climb then continues in successive stages up to the Barmash Pass, the high point of the day at 1,160 metres. A final descent leads you to Leskovik, in the heart of a preserved region, bringing this demanding and scenic stage to an end.
From LESKOVIK to PËRMET 65km 700m
You are now riding in the far south of Albania, having gradually made your way from the country’s central regions. Leaving Leskovik, the route leads through a peaceful and varied countryside, with farms and vineyards spread across the valley floor, framed by the constant presence of surrounding mountains. The terrain is rolling and pleasant, offering a steady rhythm as you follow quiet roads through rural landscapes. On arrival in Përmet, there is time to explore this small town set at the foot of the Dhembel Mountains. The Vjosa River, one of Europe’s last wild rivers, flows alongside the town, shaping its scenery and atmosphere and providing a striking natural backdrop to end the day.
From PËRMET to GJIROKASTËR 70km 420m
You continue cycling south towards Gjirokastër. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is often referred to as a “museum town” for its rich architectural and cultural heritage. Many historic houses are built from white stone, while narrow cobbled streets give the city its nickname, the “stone city”. Upon arrival, you can explore the impressive Gjirokastër Castle and visit Skenduli House, a well-preserved 300-year-old Ottoman mansion. With over 30,000 inhabitants, Gjirokastër is a lively town and offers a vivid introduction to Albanian culture through its architecture, history and everyday life.
From GJIROKASTËR to SARANDA 70km 525m
You leave Gjirokastër by vehicle for a short transfer to the top of the Muzina Pass, at around 550 metres above sea level, where the cycling begins. From here, the route follows a long and enjoyable descent towards the coast, gradually revealing open landscapes and distant views of the Ionian Sea. As you approach Saranda, the first coastal town of the journey, you continue south on a scenic loop skirting the Butrint National Park, reaching the southern tip of Albania. A small wooden ferry allows you to cross the Vivari Channel, linking Lake Butrint to the Ionian Sea, before stopping for lunch near the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Butrint. In the afternoon, you visit the ancient Greco-Roman ruins, remarkably preserved in a natural setting of wetlands and forest. The final kilometres lead you back to Saranda, cycling along the coast with views across the water towards the island of Corfu.

TIRANA
Arrive in Tirana at your leisure and check into your accommodation. You discover a capital shaped by overlapping Ottoman, Italian and communist legacies, all visible within a compact city centre. The layout is easy to grasp around Skanderbeg Square, close to Bunk’Art 2, housed in a former underground bunker and essential for understanding Albania’s recent history. Along the same boulevard stand the Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, the Great Mosque of Tirana and the Catholic Cathedral of St Paul, reflecting a society marked by decades of state atheism and today strongly attached to religious freedom. For dinner, Kalaja e Tiranës brings together several good restaurants in a lively historic setting. At the end of the day, the Artificial Lake offers a welcome pause, while Mount Dajti on the horizon reminds you how close the mountains are.
